What do streamers praise in indie games?
Published · Numbers as of
In 259 Twitch streams of 46 indie games in the week of 21 Sept 2026, we recorded 256 distinct things streamers praised, next to 906 problems. The two largest groups, about a sixth each, were small touches, secrets and conveniences (44) and strong builds, upgrades and rewards (44). Small touches, secrets and conveniences came up in 26 of the 46 games, more than any other kind of praise.
Almost every highlight names a part of the game. General praise of the whole game isn't counted, and the few broad verdicts that got through are under Other (11). These numbers show what players pointed at, not how much they enjoyed the games.

Small touches get noticed
Small touches, secrets and conveniences made up 17% of the praise and came up in 26 of 46 games. From the list: an easter egg in the main menu of Gamble With Your Friends, hidden roaming cats in PowerWash Simulator 2, item counts on inventory stacks in Fields of Mistria, and seeing how long until the next crop is ready in Tiny Eden. These are small things next to the main game, and streamers still stopped to point them out.
Builds and upgrades that feel strong
The group of strong builds, upgrades and rewards is as large, 44 highlights, but comes from fewer games (18). Four games with runs or builds, Emberward, CloverPit, Dimraeth and Mewgenics, account for 18 of them. The praise names a single pick: ice towers that feel overpowered, a fire mage build that clears fights almost alone, a boon in Hades II that becomes a favourite. If you rebalance before a fest, write down which picks streamers celebrate on camera before you weaken them.
Praise that came up in several streams
30 of the 256 highlights (12%) came up in two or more streams of the same game. By count, customization and creative freedom repeated most (7 of 29). Some smaller groups repeated at a higher rate: atmosphere and scares (4 of 8), music and sound (3 of 10), playing together (4 of 14). What to check in your own demo
- List the small touches your demo already has and check that a new player can come across them in a first session. We analysed 30 to 60 minutes of each stream, so every highlight here was found within that.
- If players can make something their own (a character, an outfit, a room), try putting it early in the demo and see whether streamers talk about it. Customization and creative freedom came up in 20 games and had the most highlights repeated across streams (7).
- When you watch a stream, note the minute of praise as well as problems (how to use Next Fest streams as a playtest). It tells you what to keep when you fix the rest.
- Read it next to the problems: what streamers struggle with most.
How we counted
Every game page lists what streamers praised, each a short title written from the transcripts. We took all 256 highlights from 46 games and had a language model put each title into one of 12 categories we set before sorting. It saw only the titles, not what the streamers said. An AI-assisted read of all 256 assignments and an independent review of the same list found 6 clear errors, which we moved by hand. For about 10 more, two categories fit about equally, and we left them. We did not check the assignments against the VODs.
What this doesn't tell you
- The two largest groups are tied, too small a gap to read anything into. The smaller categories have 8 to 29 highlights each, and their order could change with a different sorting.
- The mix follows the games in the sample. Four games give 18 of the 44 strong builds; a sample with more cozy or horror games would look different. These are 46 games picked from Twitch in one week of September, not a sample of all indie games.
- Fewer highlights than problems doesn't mean the games were disliked. General praise isn't counted, while every problem with a named cause is.
- Games had 3 to 8 analysed streams, so coverage is uneven. With 3 streams, a highlight seen twice is already most of the sample.
